Mentoring Rug Hooking
by Lenora VanDusen

In the Fall the Western Area Rug Hooking Group was invited to participate in and mentor students in rug hooking. The students of G C Rowe Jr High School in Corner Brook studied rug hooking as part of their Traditional Newfoundland and Labrador Crafts class.

Their teacher, Mrs Eileen Murphy, is to be commended for her efforts in exposing, teaching and encouraging these young people in traditional crafts.

The students had never been taught the art of rug hooking before, but many had heard stories from their Grandmothers and other family members about making mats.

This week we were invited back to their classroom for a showing of their finished work!

Many of the parents and grandparents were in attendance and everyone was amazed at the quality of their work. These photographs show each student s original artwork and a group photo of the class and the Guild members who worked with them.
