Hooked with love from Lady’s locks

By Teresa Greene

I attended the mid-winter hook-in hosted by the Central Region, what a great time. I took my newly finished cushion cover with a picture of a Newfoundland dog on it. A number of the ladies said I should share the story of my cushion with all of you.

I purchased a pattern from Joan Foster of a beautiful Newfoundland dog standing on the shore with an ice berg in the distance. I saw a number of finished pieces and they were not hooked with the same colour as my Newfoundland dog (Lady), she is black, but not as black as black yarn or black fabric. Well I decided that the only way to get her colour, was to hook with her hair. I asked around for help with preparing the hair for hooking. After checking around I found no-one spinning dog hair in Newfoundland. My husband, who saves Lady’s hair each time he grooms her, provided me with plenty of material to work with.

Not to be put off, I washed a small quantity of Lady’s hair and let it dry naturally. Then I took a few strands, rolled them between my hands to form a piece that would be good for hooking. I hooked each piece in as I rolled it. It ended up that I did not have even thickness in the pieces, but this gives the finished article texture. The finished effect is striking. I hooked the background with wool yarn, except for the iceberg, I did that with pantyhose.

I’m looking forward to camp when I can see what every one else has been hooking.
