General Standards and Guidelines for Hooked Rugs

Purpose: The RHGNL Teacher's Group wish to acknowledge that we, in NL, have a unique style of rug hooking and we wish to maintain our high standards.

This is a general guideline for RHGNL Hooked Rugs. Members of RHGNL who wish to display, sell, or have their rugs judged may use the following as a standard guideline.

  • Rugs should be hooked on a firm backing such as good quality burlap, linen or monks cloth.
  • Traditional NL Hooked Rugs used recycled materials. In following this tradition, the recycled material should be clean and of good quality. A hangtag should identify the material as recycled.
  • It is recommended that if a rug is to be sold then instructions for care of material should accompany it.
  • If a rug is labeled in a particular style then it should follow some guidelines of that style, ie; Northern Style (Grenfell). Primitive, Geometric.
  • Traditional style of hooking and originality in design is encouraged.
  • Copyright laws should be followed and credit given to the original designer.
  • Rugs should have a good general appearance.
  • Rugs should lie flat and not hooked so tightly that they curl.
  • If a rug is to be sold or judged, the underside of the rug should be viewable to judge or buyer.
  • Backing foundation should be well covered so no backing shows through top. Loops should be of an even height unless irregularity is part of the design.
  • Foundation showing underneath is acceptable ... amount depends on style and design.
  • Avoid crossovers of hooked material.
  • Have a neat finish. Different finishes are accepted. Again a finish may depend on a particular style. Eg. A burlap backing turned back and hemmed may not be acceptable except in a particular style.
  • Colours should be pleasing to the eye. Try to avoid an area "jumping out" at you. Brilliant colours should be over-dyed to dull them unless that special effect is desired and part of the general style.
  • Name or initials and date should be hooked inconspicuously into the design and /or a label attached.
  • Members should try for original designs that reflect their own personality and our own NL style of hooking.
